I Promised.

This picture is very dear to my heart. I have to say i am most proud of this piece. For my creative writing class we are doing image poems, and I decided to draw something. This is what came of it. My friend's aunt's husband died in Iraq this week, and she is pregnant with their first baby. This picture and poem are dedicated to her.

The call came in today,
“We’re sorry, but Tim has passed away,"
Time stopped, I couldn’t believe it—
—wouldn’t believe it.

At my table I sat and cried,
Wondering why my husband had to die.
Of all the soldiers on the field,
Tim, my Tim, had to be killed.

Those cruel terrorist, I hated them so,
It wasn’t at all his time to go.

His rose stands withered, cold and dead,
My hand trembles as I crawl from my bed,
I sit at the table, our picture in hand,
Staring blankly at my wedding band.

With my hand on my head, I sit and cry
If it weren’t for the baby, I would want to die.
She’ll never know her daddy,
But I’ll tell her every day
That he died a hero.

And then in the still of it all,
I hear a distant call
A hand on my shoulder
A kiss on my head,

And the words,
“We’ll always be together, I promised.”

I'm not much of a poet, but I hope that made some of you cry. It sure made me cry.
